Fire dragon dance

450Last night, we went to Pokfulam to photograph a spectacular festival ritual and it was absolutely exciting. The Fire Dragon Dance features a 67-metre dragon studded with thousands of burning joss sticks that wends and dances through the Pokfulam village; while local participants bang drums and cymbals along the way! The ritual started more than 100 years ago when there was a plague and the sulphur from the firecrackers, the fiery dragon and the noise from cymbals were believed to help drive germs and evil spirits away.
This photo was taken before the dance started when they were studding joss sticks on the dragon...only a few of the 200+ photos I took are clear enough for posting so don't miss the other 11 photos here. ;-)

That is one looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong dragon!
Flung around in stung josh sticks...how they do that? ...I mean, without the sticks falling out all over the place.... This is a Must-See on my next visit to HK. Great pics Lisi.

I can probably tell you a bit more about this "adventure"...first, that's my first time and I had always suspected I'd got stung by the joss sticks, curiously, I didn't see any falling out from the straw-made dragon, all I got was some ashes here and there.

Secondly, it's very difficult to photograph the dancing dragon...either it was dancing in circle or it was bowing to certain shrines in the village...like I said, among the 200+ there are only a few "postable"...I have pretty much posted all here and at the dpfiles blog, so, again, don't miss them...

And for those who really want to see it, this ritual is only performed during the Mid Autumn Festival, the most well known location is Tai Hang near Causeway, while the other one I know of is this one at Pokfulam...it suits me better because it was the same dragon, less people and safer for an amateur like myself.

Beautiful photo though I am especially fond of the "King of Cliche" Yeah it may well be a well photographed scene but it is truly awe inspiring, a vast humming metropolis - WOW!

Lisi,

you must spend all day moving around Hong Kong to bring us the colour of the place. Once again you have not disappointed!

Great 12 photos Lisi! ;) Sounds particularly difficult with all the movement and at night too. Night photography frustrates me...taking so many photos and hoping a lot.

I saw that on news in Singapore TV. Did you smile for us on TV? hehe... nice work!
