Queen Elizabeth II's head occupied one side of every HK coin before 1997; now, you'll find bauhinia in the supreme position.
Bauhinia Blakeana, aka, HK Orchid Tree, is the emblem of Hong Kong and also appears on HK's flag. It is nicknamed "panic flower" by college students because in spring, when they see bauhinia blooms in its most glorious, they know final exam is approaching. The nicely-shaped leaf is fondly called "clever leaf" and is dried to make bookmarks.Labels: city, Hong Kong |

Yup I heard about the Orchid tree, but i didn't know it's real name is Bauhinia Blakeana, or is that its scientific name?
When is the HK sale again...is it in June?
ã
This is such a great story. I could use seeing a few of these trees around here from time to time!
ã
Hi Anne, sale is on from now till April I think. Anywaz, many shops are giving discounts after New Year/Chinese New Year, Valentine's Day/Chinese Valentine's Day...
ã
And yes, Bauhinia Blakeana is the scientific name, after Sir Henry Blake who discovered it here in 1880.
Eric, do you need reminder for exam or clever leaf? :-)
